Welcome to New Barnet and South Friern Libraries

New Barnet and South Friern libraries are run by Inclusion Barnet on behalf of Barnet Council. As a Disabled‑led organisation, we bring a lived‑experience approach to the way we manage the service. We focus on creating welcoming spaces shaped by insight into what helps people feel included. You’ll find all the great things you’d expect from your local library, delivered with a bit of extra thought about what helps people feel seen and able to take part.

What makes our approach distinctive

While all Barnet libraries aim to be warm, accessible community hubs, our Disabled‑led approach adds an extra layer of thoughtfulness to how we run things:

Disabled‑led organisation – as a Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation (DDPO), our organisational values and leadership are rooted in lived experience. This informs how we run the service day to day.

Thoughtful, people‑centred design – we look at things like layout, quiet spaces, signage and displays through an inclusion lens, making small changes that help a wide range of people feel comfortable.

Visible inclusion – we aim to create an atmosphere where difference feels normal and welcome, and where visitors feel seen and respected.

Strong community role – like all Barnet libraries, we offer warm, free and friendly spaces. Our approach emphasises connection, confidence‑building and making it easy for everyone to take part.

What’s on offer

Both libraries, South Friern and New Barnet, offer a wide range of activities, services and resources for the whole community. A few highlights include:

Books, collections and resources

• Dyslexia‑friendly displays
• Large print books and audiobooks
• Well‑organised, easy‑to‑navigate layout
• Free digital access (computers, WiFi, printing facilities etc.)

Warm, welcoming community spaces

• Part of Barnet’s Warm Spaces network (seasonal)
• Free places to sit, connect, read or relax
• Occasionally we give away *household essentials, when available.

*e.g. during winter 2025 we provided a small number of carbon monoxide   meters and slow cookers

Activities and events

• Rhyme Time
• Book group
• Writing sessions
• Conversation Café (supporting people learning English and building confidence)
• Seasonal and community events

Volunteering

Volunteers are at the heart of our libraries. People join us from many different backgrounds, bringing a mix of skills, interests and experiences — including some with lived experience of disability or long‑term conditions.

We focus on building confidence, offering flexible roles, and creating a supportive environment where people can try new things. Many volunteers have gone on to other roles, training or community involvement, and we’re proud to play a part in their journey.

Spaces for hire

Our South Friern Library has two meeting rooms available for hire during opening hours. They’re ideal for community groups, small gatherings or local activities. We offer discounted rates for voluntary and community groups. More information – spaces to hire.
