Volunteering
Our Inclusion Barnet library at South Friern, Colney Hatch Lane N10 1HD, and New Barnet, New Barnet Leisure Centre, Lawton Road EN4 9BS, offers a great opportunity for volunteering – working with the public, gaining customer service and library skills, making friends and contributing to the community.
Many of our volunteers have gone on, or returned to, paid employment after spending time with us, though we also have many volunteers who are retired. Others have gone into education or other volunteering roles. Our volunteers represent the diverse population of Barnet as a whole and we welcome disabled volunteers, including those with mental health or long term conditions.
The role includes including finding requested books and issuing them, processing returns, shelving, answering enquiries, greeting people at the collection and ensuring COVID safe practice throughout the premises.
This role is flexible and can be arranged to suit people’s abilities but we do like to have everybody do a little of everything, when possible. Friendliness, flexibility and reliability are far more important to us than specific customer service experience. Basic English and IT skills essential.
Gloves and cleaning materials will be provided on site, and staff will be encouraging frequent hand washing and enforcing social distancing. Local applicants are favoured, to avoid excess travel.
Volunteers would be expected to sign up for regular 3-4 hour shifts, either morning or afternoon, on one (or more) of the following days:
South Friern Library:
Tues 4-7pm, Wed & Thurs 10am-5pm, Sat 2-5pm
New Barnet Library:
Tues 10am-2pm, thurs 4-7pm, Fri 10am-5pm, Sat 9am-12 noon
Please note, volunteers will require a DBS check.
