New Barnet Council consultation – Proposed increases to Council Tax
There is a new Barnet Council consultation on their 2025 to 2026 Budget. The Budget outlines how the council plans to spend its money. Barnet Council is facing a significant budget shortfall and is seeking public input on proposed cost-saving measures. These proposals could impact essential services and potentially increase financial burdens on residents. To ensure your voice is heard, please take the time to review the consultation document and complete the online survey. Your participation is crucial in shaping the future of Barnet.
The problem
Barnet Council don’t have enough income to cover all the services they need to provide. This is partly due to rising costs and cuts in government funding.
They need to find an extra £74.2 million next year.
What they are suggesting:
They’ve already saved money in the past and are proposing new ways to save and raise income next year, such as:
- Cutting costs in some areas of the council
- Finding new ways to make money (e.g. charging more for some services)
- Increasing Council Tax by 2.98%
- Adding an extra charge to Council Tax specifically for adult social care (2%)
What you can comment on:
The Council wants to hear your opinion on these proposals. This includes:
- The overall budget and their saving/income proposals
- The proposed Council Tax increase
- The proposed extra charge for adult social care
The consultation closes 22 January 2025.

They’ll use your feedback to decide if their plans are the best way forward.
They’ll keep looking for ways to save money and raise income in the future, and they’ll ask for your input again on those plans.
