Accessible housing Day of Action

On Monday 29 July, Inclusion London is organising a Day of Action at Westminster to demand that the Government raise the minimum accessibility standards for new build homes across the UK. The Day of Action marks two years since the Government committed to raising accessibility standards, but these changes still haven’t happened.

We have signed the open letter, along with many other Disabled People’s Organisations across the UK, that will be handed to the government. You can get involved by emailing your MP and attending the demonstration next week.

Why Accessible Housing Matters

Many Disabled people are living in homes where they cannot wash, cook, or access their house independently. 1 in 5 Disabled people in social housing and 1 in 3 Disabled private renters live in inaccessible homes that do not meet their needs. Accessible housing also includes creating homes that can be adapted to suit changing needs throughout someone’s lifetime.

Unsafe, inaccessible, and unaffordable housing remain a significant barrier to independence for Disabled people. This demonstration is an opportunity to push for change!

When is the demonstration?

  • When: Monday 29 July 2024
  • Where: Parliament Square, Westminster, London
  • Time: 12 to 1 pm, followed by a march to Downing Street

What will happen at the demonstration?

Demonstration in Parliament Square:
From 12 pm to 1 pm, join Inclusion London and other DDPOs (Deaf & Disabled People’s Organisations) to hear from Disabled people sharing their experiences with accessible and inaccessible housing. Participants can bring banners and props.

March to Downing Street:
At 1pm, participants will march to Downing Street to hand in the letter to the Government.

What we are asking the Government to do:

  • Make the M4(2) ‘accessible and adaptable’ standard the minimum requirement for all new build homes.
  • Set a minimum target of 10% of new build homes to meet the M4(3) wheelchair user standard.
  • Ensure that the majority of accessible homes are built in the social rented sector.
